What Causes Roof Leaks During Michigan Winters?
by Art Tolsma
Every winter, Michigan homeowners face a familiar problem: water dripping into the attic or along the ceiling during the coldest months. At first, it may seem like a roof failure, but the real cause often lies in a hidden process that happens when heat and ice meet. Roof leaks in winter are most often caused by what are called ice dams, and understanding how they form is the first step to preventing them. When snow falls on a roof, it usually sits harmlessly on top until it melts in warmer weather.
But in many homes, heat escapes from inside the living space into the attic. That warm air can seep through small gaps in insulation or light fixtures, gradually warming the underside of the roof deck. As that surface heats up, the snow in contact with it begins to melt, even when outside temperatures remain below freezing.
The melted snow then runs down the roof toward the eaves, the colder outer edge that extends beyond the heated portion of the house. There, the water refreezes, creating a layer of ice. Each day, this cycle repeats: melt, flow, and refreeze. Over time, the ice builds up into a ridge along the edge of the roof.
When that ridge becomes thick enough, the melted water trapped behind it has nowhere to go and can back up under the shingles, eventually leaking into the attic or down interior walls. That’s why many winter leaks appear only during thawing and refreezing cycles, not during steady cold.
Proper attic ventilation and insulation are key to reducing this problem. Good ventilation allows cold outside air to circulate under the roof deck, keeping its temperature consistent and preventing uneven melting. Adequate insulation keeps warm air inside the living areas where it belongs, reducing heat loss into the attic.
It’s also helpful to check for any air leaks or gaps where warm air might escape. Small openings around exhaust fans, chimneys, and attic access doors can allow heat to reach the roof deck. Sealing these areas and maintaining balanced attic airflow can make a noticeable difference over time.
While ice dams can occur on any roof, homes with low slopes or poor ventilation are especially vulnerable. Once leaks begin, the water can damage insulation, drywall, and wood framing before it’s visible inside the house. Catching these issues early helps prevent costly repairs later in the season.
Roof leaks in winter are not always a sign of roof failure. They are often a symptom of heat loss and poor ventilation working together during Michigan’s freeze and thaw cycles. With the right combination of insulation, airflow, and regular inspection, most winter leaks can be minimized or eliminated entirely.
