It’s also helpful to check for any air leaks or gaps where warm air might escape. Small openings around exhaust fans, chimneys, and attic access doors can allow heat to reach the roof deck. Sealing these areas and maintaining balanced attic airflow can make a noticeable difference over time.
While ice dams can occur on any roof, homes with low slopes or poor ventilation are especially vulnerable. Once leaks begin, the water can damage insulation, drywall, and wood framing before it’s visible inside the house. Catching these issues early helps prevent costly repairs later in the season.
Roof leaks in winter are not always a sign of roof failure. They are often a symptom of heat loss and poor ventilation working together during Michigan’s freeze and thaw cycles.
