Why Gum Disease Deserves More Attention Than You Think

    by Dr. Danika Crabtree

Many people think gum disease is simply about sore or bleeding gums, but the reality is far more complex. Gum disease, or periodontal disease, affects not only the soft tissue around your teeth but also the bone that supports them. It is one of the most common yet least understood oral health problems, often developing slowly and without obvious pain.In its earliest stage, called gingivitis, the gums may look red or bleed during brushing or flossing. These signs are easy to overlook, especially if there is no discomfort. Over time, however, untreated gingivitis can

Over time, however, untreated gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more serious infection that damages the supporting bone and tissue around the teeth. Once that bone loss begins, it cannot grow back on its own.

Bacteria in dental plaque are the main cause of gum disease. When plaque hardens into tartar, regular brushing and flossing can no longer remove it, allowing bacteria to spread below the gumline. This triggers an inflammatory response that gradually breaks down the connective tissue and bone. As the gums recede and the bone weakens, teeth may loosen or shift, changing how they fit together.

The most concerning aspect of gum disease is that it often progresses without pain, making regular checkups critical for early detection. Even mild bleeding or persistent bad breath can be early warning signs. Many patients are surprised to learn that gum disease is linked to systemic health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems. Chronic inflammation in the mouth can contribute to inflammation elsewhere in the body, affecting overall wellness.

A periodontist specializes in diagnosing and treating these conditions before they become advanced. Early intervention may involve deep cleaning procedures that remove bacteria below the gumline, allowing the tissue to heal and reattach. In more severe cases, surgical treatments can help restore lost bone and tissue, stabilizing the teeth and preventing further damage.

Maintaining healthy gums requires a combination of daily care and professional monitoring. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and scheduling regular dental visits are essential steps. For those with a history of gum problems or risk factors like smoking, diabetes, or genetic susceptibility, seeing a periodontist can make a lasting difference.

Gum disease can be silent, but its effects are not. Understanding how it develops and taking small preventive steps can preserve both your smile and your health for years to come.
